We were able to make that happen here at Siapin Horticulture. During this high profile project in Fox Plaza in Century City, we installed a new patio for the office building. Aside from just adding a new seating area, this project was unique because of the “epic system”, which captures all rainwater on sight and stores in the pipes on the ground which feeds the plants. This is a better technique than just recycling the water. Something else that might stand out is the drip irrigation which also has the potential to save water by granting the water to slowly go down to the roots of the plants, that way the water can most likely go directly into the roots and help avoid evaporation.

Gutters and curbs transport flow fast to a stormwater drain without allowing for pollutant removal or infiltration using an inlet filter. Eliminating gutters and curbs can reduce runoff volumes and increase sheet flow. Maintaining sheet flow by removing gutters and curbs that direct runoff into bioretention basins and swales that are vegetated helps to prevent soil erosion by stormwater also helps retain hydraulic conditions (pre-development). A level distributor, which is a channel designed to convert concentrated discharge into a level stream and evenly distribute it on a slope, can also be included to prevent soil erosion.

Here at Gelson’s Market in Century City, we wanted to bring some green to the entrance which really seemed to be a concrete jungle. We went with some modern flower boxes and drought friendly succulents to really change things up. The use of permeable pavement is a stormwater BMP which allows for more environmentally sound outdoor flooring. It is a more feasible alternative to concrete and asphalt flooring in preventing runoff, erosion, and water pollution.
